During the past 2 weeks the children were assigned their first Reading Log homework. The sheet I sent home requires your child to self-select a book, read for a sustained time of 20 minutes and to record the title of the book, the name of the author, and to write five words per night that are new or interesting. We have reviewed the format in class and I will be asking the children to read for a longer amount of time as the year progresses. In addition, the children will soon be required to practice the language mechanics skills learned in class utilizing the text they select for reading at home. The purpose of the log for this week is to help establish a quiet time and place to develop independent reading ability. Many of the children have been delighted to tell me they are reading at home for the absolute enjoyment of it already! This is wonderful! Please keep up the good work!
For now, I prefer the children select books they will enjoy reading. This will help me discover a pattern of interest from each child. As I get to know your child better, I will be offering suggestions to “stretch” them as a reader. In the next few weeks, I will be conferencing with each child in class to discuss their ideas, personal goals and expectations in terms of reading.
If your child is reluctant to read, please feel free to share the reading with them. Most children love to have a special time to take turns reading with you and often look forward to the experience. Reading the same book at separate times and discussing it is another option you may consider.
If you are experiencing a very difficult time having your child read every night, please don’t hesitate to let me know! This is not uncommon among fourth and fifth graders, so please let me know right away by writing a note in their agenda with a good time to call you. I can discuss strategies to help you at home.
Also, please remember to initial beside the time your child spent reading to ensure your child is participating in this program. Your support is greatly appreciated!
